Shows like Narcos and its spinoff Narcos: Mexico is no doubt two of the best drug lord shows of this time. While everything you learn is scary, it is also interesting to see what goes on in the underworld. If you have watched both of these amazing Netflix shows and are hungry for more, we’ve got you covered!
There are a few more TV series about drug lords that are just as captivating. But before we get to that, we are compelled to discuss something of utmost importance here.
You see, the whole point of these shows is to chill you to the core and leave you in wonder about how things work. And this can’t happen unless you are glued to the screen with no interruptions. Having a terrible internet connection doesn’t allow that. If your internet connection has been giving any problems lately, then you should consider switching ISPs.
Our advice: Get an ISP with a good customer service reputation, so that if you ever run into any issues, you know that they will always be there to help. Xfinity Internet makes for a great example – click here to see if Xfinity is available in your area.
Now, on to the TV shows!
Five Best Shows Like Narcos and Narcos
El Chapo (2017-2018)
Just like how Narcos and Narcos: Mexico are based on true stories and real drug lords, El Chapo is also based on an actual drug lord. But you must already know that since everybody knows this guy and the reason for his popularity. El Chapo is one of the biggest and most intimidating drug lords of this time. And yes, he is still alive and in prison.
This show is the story of how he climbed the ranks from just another low-ranking guy in the cartel to a drug lord everyone fears. This is the same El Chapo you have seen in Narcos: Mexico.
Ozark (2017-2022)
Ozark is a fictional show that isn’t really based on a specific person in real life, but it will be false to say that everything here is completely imaginary. While the characters are all fictional, the dealings, processes, and everything carried out are based on real stories.
Instead of focusing on the source and destination of drugs and the deals made to carry this out, this show focuses on the financial side of things. Meaning that it focuses on the money laundering side to keep the crime undercover. Hence, it is interesting to look at how things work in a drug cartel from another perspective.
Queen of the South (2016-2021)
We see a lot of stories and movies about male drug lords. But what about females? Is it possible that they just don’t pick “drug lord” as a career option? Well, of course not. The thing is, there are a lot of notorious female drug lords out there as well, but we just don’t see it being portrayed in shows and movies often. And if you want to watch a show like that, stream Queen of the South!
This show is loosely based on a true story about a real female drug lord, which makes it all the more captivating.
The Shield (2002-2008)
Whenever there is a story about a drug lord and his/her cartel, there is no such thing as one story or one perspective. There is always another way to look at it, or another angle to view it from. Such is the case for this show as well, where we get to view things from a corrupt cop’s perspective.
While this isn’t based on a true story, it is inspired by one. This show gives us a perspective on how drug cartels and criminals can “buy” their way to safety, thanks to these corrupt cops. But that’s not even the best thing about this show. We get to see how these cops aren’t exactly evil, but rather just a product of their environment and situation.
The Wire (2002-2008)
The last show on this list is The Wire and it is one of the best series about drug lords and crime to grace the screens. Once again, this show isn’t based on a real story, but it is inspired and recreated using real stories and experiences of the people involved in a similar lifestyle. In this show, we get to see how both parties, the cops and the criminals, profit from this dangerous business.
This show also depicts how much more difficult it is for black communities to survive racism and discrimination leading them to a life of crime.
In Closing
Which show is the first one you’re going to watch? Undoubtedly, all of them are amazing and spectacular shows that will leave you with goosebumps. Of course, if you have caught up with most of these or all of these, there are plenty more options you can select from like Breaking Bad, American Gangster, Surviving Escobar: Alias JJ, Narcos Saints, and more. But of course, you should make sure to look at the ratings and watch at your discretion since some of these could be very scarring.
